Kangaroos grow to get 5 1/2 feet tall and weigh 200 pounds...the same size as a grown man.
The moms have babies that grow in their pouches until they are old enough to come out and play.
Their smaller cousins the Bennett’s Wallabies have lived at the Ranch for many years.
- A boy kangaroo is called a buck, boomer, jack or
old man.
- A girl kangaroo is called a doe, flyer, jill, or roo.
- A group of kangaroos is called a mob, troop or herd.
- A baby kangaroo is called a joey.
When hopping, 70% of the time is spent in the air. And, only their over powered rear legs are used in travel. Their front legs are more like arms being they spend so much of their time upright.
They use their fore arms to groom. They lick their arms then rub them along their bodies to comb and release dirt. They also have claws on their paws that they also use to scratch and comb their hair.
They can hop at speeds of over 40 miles per hour.
When the babies are born they are the size of a lima bean. After they are born they travel to the mom’s pouch and remain in the pouch until they are at least 6 months old. Then the go in and out of the pouch until the mom kicks them out! This is a characteristic that is only found in a group called marsupials. Red Kangaroos are the largest of this group.

Their tails are used for balance when hopping and when on the ground.
They will often use their tails as a third leg. |
